Happy St Andrew’s Day
on Wednesday, 30th November, 2011 at 2:49 pmMay I wish you a happy day on this great Scottish holiday. Not many folk seem to have the day off. Instead we’re having a range of public sector strikes. Since these are a protest against the UK government’s policies, maybe there’s an element of national pride in there, although our Scottish Government does not officially approve.
Enough of politics; this is the day of old St Andrew, a fisherman and a pal of Jesus. Scotland adopted the old boy posthumously and named the capital city after him. The national flag features his cross in silver over an azure ground (not that horrible dark blue worn by our soccer team) which is often to be seen in our skies when aircraft cross contrails in the busy airspace over Scotland’s central belt. The day starts a three-day school holiday, here in sunny Dumfries and Galloway, and our number one son is enjoying the break.
Have a slightly better day, if you can, wherever you are.
